Guinea Pig Price in India

Short Answer

Guinea pigs come in pairs. See today's prices from our farm, what a good home costs to set up, and why hay alone is about ₹2,800 a month for a pair.

The Basics

Guinea pigs do best in pairs, so plan for two. The table below gives today’s prices from our shop. A good home for a pair costs about ₹10,000 to set up once, or ₹5,000 for a pair with our starter kit, which comes with a smaller cage. Hay is the biggest running cost: about ₹2,800 a month for a pair, because guinea pigs eat a lot of it. These sums use our shop prices of 31 October 2026.

What Changes the Price

  • Single, pair or kit: a pair costs less than two singles, and a pair with a starter kit adds the cage, hay, bedding and vitamins.
  • What the price covers: a vet health check, deworming, a care sheet and a pet card come with every guinea pig.
  • Health and support: a lower price is no bargain if the pet was not health-checked or the seller disappears after the sale.

Two ways to start, both priced from our shop. The starter kit is the quick one (see the starter kit guide). The second is a bigger home that comes close to the 120 x 60 cm floor our care guide asks for; the cage size guide compares our cages.

Monthly Cost: Start With the Hay

Hay is the part of the bill you can count. On our farm, 1 kg of hay lasts one guinea pig about 5 days and a pair about 3 to 4 days (the full table is in our hay guide). Some hay is always pulled out and slept on, which is normal. By that table a pair uses about 8 to 9 kg a month.

Hay for a pair The sum Per month, about
Fresh Grass Hay, 1 kg packs 8 to 9 kg at ₹325 a kg ₹2,800
Organic Timothy Hay, 1 kg packs 8 to 9 kg at ₹700 a kg ₹6,000
One guinea pig on Fresh Grass Hay About 6 kg at ₹325 a kg ₹1,950

Everything else comes on top: fresh vegetables from your local market, a small portion of pellets (Timothy Hay Pellets are ₹280 for 400 g and ₹550 for 1 kg), bedding (Organic Bedding Hay is ₹150 a bag) and a vet visit when needed. So the one number to plan on is about ₹2,800 a month for hay for a pair, plus those extras. Guinea pigs live 5 to 6 years, sometimes longer, so plan for the whole time, including someone to care for them when you travel: we board guinea pigs at our farm (see pet boarding). Cheap Listings: What to Check

Classified sites sometimes show guinea pigs for a few hundred rupees. Before you buy from anyone, including us, check these (and see how to choose a healthy guinea pig or rabbit):

  • Are the eyes clear, the nose dry and the coat clean, with no bald or scabby patches?
  • Is it eating and moving about, and is the bottom clean?
  • Can the seller tell you the age and whether it is a boy or a girl? Many “surprise litters” start with a wrongly sexed pair.
  • Will the seller answer your questions after you take it home?
  • Is the guinea pig coming from your city, or travelling for days from another state?

Price Questions

How much does a guinea pig cost in India?

It depends on the seller. At our farm in Sector 109, today’s prices for a single guinea pig, a pair and a pair with a starter kit are in the table on this page, straight from our shop. Whoever you buy from, ask about the health check, the sex and the help you get after the sale, not only the price.

Is a pair more expensive to keep than one?

A little more, not double. They share a cage, water bottle and hideouts. By our hay table a pair eats about 8 to 9 kg of hay a month against about 6 kg for one, so roughly 40 percent more. A pair is much happier, so it is worth it.

What does a starter kit include?

Our “Pair with Kit” option comes with a 28 x 14 inch expandable cage, timothy hay, feeding hay, bedding hay and multivitamins, as the guinea pig’s page lists. The cage is a start: our care guide asks for at least 120 x 60 cm of floor for two, so plan to add panels.

How much does it cost to keep a guinea pig each month?

Hay alone is about ₹2,800 a month for a pair on Fresh Grass Hay at ₹325 a kg (8 to 9 kg a month), or about ₹1,950 for one guinea pig. Add vegetables, pellets, bedding and the occasional vet visit.

Are guinea pigs from classifieds a good idea?

They can be, but check the pet’s health carefully, confirm the sex, and make sure the seller will help after the sale. A sick guinea pig quickly costs more than you saved.
