One Hamster, One Cage
Syrian hamsters live alone. The RSPCA says Syrian hamsters shouldn’t live together because they aren’t naturally sociable, and adults can be aggressive towards each other. Whichever option you choose, each hamster needs its own cage.
Hamsters are busiest in the evening and at night, and they sleep through the day. If you want a pet to cuddle in the afternoon, a pair of guinea pigs may suit you better; our guinea pig, rabbit or hamster comparison sets them side by side.
What a Hamster Needs Before It Comes Home
Many hamster cages are sold too small, so measure the floor before you buy, wherever you buy.
- Cage: no smaller than 100 x 50 cm of floor and 50 cm tall, says Blue Cross, with gaps between bars under 1 cm so it cannot squeeze out. Bigger is better.
- Bedding: at least 20 cm of soft bedding to dig tunnels and nests in. See our bedding.
- Wheel: 27 to 32 cm across for a Syrian, upright, with a solid running surface. Blue Cross warns that the wheels sold with cages are not always suitable.
- Extras: a hideout and a water bottle.
Our Hamster Cage with Wheel comes with a wheel, a water bottle, a food cup and a small house. Its page does not list the floor or wheel size, so ask us on WhatsApp for both and check them against the numbers above before you buy.
What Comes Home With Your Hamster
- A vet check. Our pets go home once, so our vet checks every one before it leaves.
- A care sheet and a pet card. Every pet leaves with both.
- The facts. You get the gender, the health check and how to care for it.
- Us on WhatsApp for any question, long after you buy.
Ask us the age of the hamster you like. Blue Cross says a hamster should not be rehomed before six weeks old, and that hamsters can be sexually mature from four weeks, so the age and the sex matter.

Your First Week
- Put the cage in a quiet room, away from direct sun, draughts and heaters.
- Let your hamster settle for a few days before you handle it.
- Offer food in the evening, when it wakes. Blue Cross says portions of fresh food should be about as small as the hamster’s ear.
- Do not wake it in the day to play.
Our hamster care guide covers food, bedding, wheels and summer care in detail.
Hamster Questions
What is the price of a hamster in Gurgaon?
Today’s prices are in the table on this page, straight from our shop. A hamster also needs a proper cage, a wheel and bedding, so look at the cage as part of the cost.
Can two Syrian hamsters live together?
No. The RSPCA says Syrian hamsters aren’t naturally sociable and are better kept on their own. Keep one Syrian per cage.
What size cage does a Syrian hamster need?
No smaller than 100 x 50 cm of floor and 50 cm tall, says Blue Cross, with at least 20 cm of bedding to burrow in.
Are hamsters good pets for children?
They are small and full of character, but the RSPCA says their needs are complex and rough handling can injure them. An adult should always be responsible for a hamster’s care and handling.
How long do hamsters live?
The RSPCA says hamsters usually live for up to two years, and some live longer.
Do you deliver hamsters to Delhi and Noida?
Yes. We deliver across Delhi NCR, including Delhi, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad, on your area’s delivery day, and delivery is free. Pets are booked with 5% by UPI; the rest you pay on delivery.
Are hamsters allowed as pets in India?
Yes. India’s Pet Shop Rules, 2018 name the hamster as a pet animal, next to dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. Check your housing society’s pet rules before you bring one home.
